Upper Eden History Society –Summer Outings 2021

Unfortunately, the continuing Covid-19 lockdown meant that we had to cancel any Summer Outings for 2020 and 2021

The section below shows what we did in the last year that a Summer programme was operated, and we hope that 2022 will allow a return to normality.

Epiacum Roman Fort at Alston, plus a train ride on England ’s highest narrow-gauge railway

Minibus pick-up Kirkby Stephen Pennine Hotel 10:00, Brough 10:10. We stop at Alston South Tynedale Railway Station to use the facilities then on to Epiacum for a tour of the Roman fort 11:30 to 13:00.  Our minibus returns to Alston for lunch and free time, then an optional train trip departing Alston 15:00 for Slaggyford (drinks and snacks available), return on 16:00 train, arrive Alston 16:35.  Our minibus will be at the station to meet us and depart for home.

This trip involves rough walking up a steep muddy track to the Roman fort, then on uneven ground around the fort. The views are magnificent but it is an exposed site; waterproofs, warm clothes and appropriate footwear recommended.

Cost per person - £14  (£12 minibus, £2 guided tour).  Optional ‘Rover’ train ticket £10 – if we are a group of 10 or more, 10% discount on train tickets.  Places are limited, please book by 10th May.


Monday 17th June

Rokeby Park and Egglestone Priory – an afternoon out near Barnard Castle

Minibus pick-up Kirkby Stephen Pennine Hotel 12:45, Brough 12:55. We have arranged a guided tour at Rokeby Park , built between 1725 and 1730 by Sir Thomas Robinson (1702-1777) and described as “one of the purest examples of the neo-Palladian villa”.  We will also visit the charming ruins of Egglestone Priory, a small monastery of Premonstratensian ‘white canons’ now managed by English Heritage.  On the way back to Kirkby Stephen we will stop at The Cross Lanes Organic Farm Shop and Café  for refreshments.

Cost per person - £16 (£9 minibus, Rokeby Park tour £7)  Egglestone Priory free.  Places are limited, please book by 3rd June.


Wednesday 10th July

Ivy Cottage Breadmakers at Kirkby Stephen Hostel

Mike and Marcella will talk about early wheat varieties, and demonstrate making sourdough bread.  The talk will begin at 2pm, prompt and the presentation will last for about 2 hours.

Cost per person - £8.  Places are limited please book by 1st July.


Thursday 15thAugust

Ripon Workhouse Museum – a guided tour

Minibus pick-up Kirkby Stephen Pennine Hotel 10:00, Brough 10:10.  Coffee, tea & biscuits on arrival at the workhouse – (2 hour tour).   Free time in Ripon in the afternoon or the Police museum can be visited at a small extra cost (pay on the day). Depart Ripon 16:30 for Kirkby Stephen.

Cost per person -  £24 (£15 minibus, Ripon Workhouse £9.)  Places are limited, please book by 1st August.


Wednesday 25th September

Kendal-Lancaster Canal - a guided walk

Minibus pick-up Brough 09:45, Brough Sowerby 09:50, KS Social Club 10:00 arriving Kendal 10.30. The programme will comprise a morning guided walk of about 3 km (two-hours), led by Raynor Shaw, examining the remains of the canal (filled-in in the 1960s) and canal-side operations as it approaches Kendal.  After lunch (approx.12:30-13:30) an optional second guided tour will explore the historic buildings and industries of the former Canal Head Basin in Kendal.  Depart Kendal 16:30, arrive KS 17:00.
